Education Mission

To Promote the education and understanding of the contributions of Hispanics to the development of New Mexico and the nation.  The Black Legend, an intentional misdirection of the history of Spain and its people, has biased its history, especially among English and American historians.  It is our intent to give another perspective without such bias. History should be viewed with an understanding of the culture and the circumstances of the time and place of the action without judging according to modern sensibilities.  To begin, one should bear in mind that Spain stopped its exploration for twelve years while the  laws of the Indies, protecting the natives peoples, were written.  No other nation has exhibited such a concern for the Indian.  To call the Spanish cruel and vicious is excessive and basically unfair.
